Vision

What are the facts?

  • 253M people are blind or have moderate to severe distance vision impairment (MVSI)
  • 1.1 Billion have near-vision impairment simply because they don’t have a pair of glasses
  • >75% of all blindness and MVSI is avoidable
  • 89% of people with visual impairment live in developing countries

Ever since Helen Keller inspired us to champion the cause in 1925, we’ve served and advocated for the blind and visually impaired. Nearly a century later, this long-standing mission continues unhindered.

We Have a Plan

We have a long history of serving the blind and visually impaired, and remain committed to continuing this mission into our next century of service.

Our Strategic Objective

Prevent avoidable blindness and improve quality of life for people who are blind and visually impaired.

What are BES Lions Doing Locally About This?

In and around the Borough of Barwell and Earl Shilton you may have seen our Spectacle Collection bins. These are small, often grey bins with our logo and a picture of a pair of spectacles on the front.

Many of us who wear spectacles replace them every couple of years. But then what do you do with the old ones? They often accumulate in a drawer or cupboard BUT they can be recycled and put to good use!

By donating your unwanted spectacles into our bins, you will help those in need. Each pair will be tested and graded by a qualified optician. They will then be cleaned and packed and then shipped anywhere in the world where they may be needed by those less fortunate than ourselves.

In and around the Borough the following locations have a Lions donation spectacle bin or collection facility:

  • Hinckley & Bosworth Hospital Reception
  • Sapcote Methodist Church (collection facility)
  • LBC Baptist Church, Earl Shilton
  • Wood Street Opticians, Earl Shilton
  • Hall Lane Baptist Church, Coalville
